Encounters

"Encounters artists reach members of the community simply by listening. They create art by
allowing people a place to come to, a place to talk about our lives, and our world"

Dear Subscriber

Welcome

Hello and welcome to our news update.  Over the past year Encounters have delivered a diverse range of participatory arts projects that have taken us to Liverpool, Winchester, Batley and Sheffield.  We are now back in Liverpool working on Four Corners, a large project involving residents from across the four corners of the city.  Encounters have been involved in curating an exhibition, programming a series of one off events and creating a unique performance event, A Little Patch of Ground.  There are many opportunities to see this range of work during the Four Corners week of 22nd - 29th July.  We hope you can make it.

A Little Patch of Ground

Performance dates:
Wednesday 22 July and Friday 24 July, 7.00pm

Saturday 25 July, 3.00pm
The Bluecoat, Liverpool

Our new performance event A Little Patch of Ground will be premiered and shown at the Bluecoat as part of Four Corners 09, Liverpool’s flagship neighbourhood arts programme.  A Little Patch of Ground is a 12 week project involving 18 residents from across Liverpool, aged 6 – 84 yrs, who came together to grow vegetables, share food, and take part in a creative exchange of stories, images, objects and ideas.  A Little Patch of Ground explores the relationships people have with each other, with where they live and with the wider natural world around them. The project culminates in performances at the Bluecoat as part of Four Corners week.

Tickets are free and available from the Bluecoat, but book early as numbers are limited.  T: 0151 702 5324;  E: info@thebluecoat.org.uk ;  W: www.thebluecoat.org.uk

Four Corners 09 at the Bluecoat

Wednesday 22nd – Wednesday 29th July 2009
Exhibition open 10.00 am – 6.00 pm
The Bluecoat, Liverpool

Encounters’ Creative Director Ruth Ben-Tovim has been this year’s Four Corners Artistic Director.  Four Corners is a city-wide neighbourhood regeneration programme working with residents, cultural organisations and neighbourhood services. It seeks to examine the life of Liverpool’s communities by reflecting significant changes – capturing memories, aspirations and supporting community cohesion through positive messages.

Ruth worked with associate artists, Anne-Marie Culhane and Jo Slater to curate and programme a hands-on exhibition and series of participatory events all on the theme of the environment.  You can visit the exhibition at the Bluecoat from 22nd – 29th July and see the highlights of the Four Corners 09 projects. The Four Corners 09 projects involved residents making connections and links between themselves, others and the wider natural world and the stories of these deepening connections are at the heart of the Four Corners exhibition week.

You can also take part in one of the week's events, from practical living workshops to a swap shop Sunday.  Details are available on this Four Corners flyer.

We hope to see you there!
